Collage-Mas means capturing the Spirit of Giving with Collage Chemistry and Love

Ah yes, the Holidaze is upon us , and here at FeMail Studio Productions, you will find me and Suzi fast at work like industrious and gluey elves, creating one-of-a kind post card collages.

For the past 2 years our signature post cards have only been available at Alchemy Initiative’s Handmade Holiday Fest for one weekend in December, in Pittsfield, MA.

This year, you will find our 2012 line of very funny, mod/retro Santa, Doggie & Angel fashion mash-ups at the Holiday Art (s)Hop in Burlington, Vermont’s Hip South End. What a thrill for Fe-Mail to be in VT for a second visit this season. We are hosted again by The Lamp Shop, after a fun premiere in September with thanks to our hosts Liz Segal and Andy Arp.

Whenever Suzi and I collaborate in the studio, there is collage chemistry that includes plenty of laughter, vintage, current and odd ball materials punctuated with cups of tea. This year we brought the manly energy of the Santa Stud and the companionship of the loyal Doggie into our mix.

You will find our fashion Angel 2012 to include a guitarist, stylish woodland and lodge girls and vintage mountain sports gals. There’s advice about how to host, tips on mixology, how to improve dictation, the bath and of course “the perfect gift”. A 1949 New Yorker inspired our series of past vs. present mash-ups. Cancelled Christmas Postage stamps turn up here and there. Even Rudolph makes an appearance again this year!

These one-of-a kinds are our gift to the holiday shopper looking to send original art through the mail to a cherished friend. They are this season’s best value for the budget-minded shopper!

If you miss out on FeMail at the Holiday Art sHop in Burlington- Dec 14, 15 & 16th you can find our 2012 FeMail Art Note cards (printed blank 5 x 7 cards) at the following locations:

Thursday December 5th from 5-7 pm

Penny Best with a Mum

When Laundry Line Divine blogger Suzi and Pippa Best, co-creator of the Story of Mum, a vibrant online community of mothers, met on Twitter, they created a bond through sharing their work with and for and as mothers through the arts online. Suzi’s art inspired the Mama Mash-Ups of Story of Mum’s touring exhibition and events programme: Story of Mum: Mums Making an Exhibition of Ourselves. With Story of Mum’s other half, Pippa’s mother Penny, a mighty collaboration has been forged.

Come make Mama Mash-Up postal art with these three dynamic fire-starters. Learn some simple art techniques you can take home and help support the Museum of Motherhood by contributing to the art archive with a piece of mail art. In this workshop we will be making mail art to send as messages of hope to other mothers and creating a group poem.

The Museum of Motherhood is excited to host this art workshop and a inaugural reading of An Anthology of Babes: 36 Women Give Motherhood a Voice by several of the contributing authors, Cheryl Paley of Hoboken NJ, Joanne Tombrakos of Manhattan, NY and Lori Landau from Mahwah, NJ. These mother artists will read stories from the book.

Story of Mum is a community of creative mamas celebrating the ups and downs of motherhood and sharing their stories at www.storyofmum.com. This special event hosted in partnership with Laundry Line Divine and the Museum of Motherhood marks the New York launch of Story of Mum: Mums Making an Exhibition of Ourselves, Story of Mum’s exhibition and events programme from Thursday 5 December to Sunday 8 December at M.O.M.

EXHIBITION TOUR INFO

Story of Mum: Moms Making an Exhibition of Ourselves

British mother-daughter team Pippa and Penny Best find the perfect home for their inspirational exhibition tour this December in New York’s The Museum of Motherhood, a unique education and exhibition centre dedicated to the exploration of family.

Story of Mum is a community of creative mamas celebrating the ups and downs of motherhood and sharing their stories at www.storyofmum.com. Their tour, Story of Mum: Mums Making an Exhibition of Ourselves, visits New York from Thursday 5 December to Sunday 8 December, with M.O.M. hosting an exciting programme of participatory events.

On Thursday from 5pm to 7pm, visionary FeMail artist Suzi Banks Baum joins Story of Mum to present an evening of Femail Mama Mash-Up art-making alongside readings from writers Cheryl Paley, Joanne Tombrakos and Lori Landau from Suzi’s powerful book: An Anthology of Babes: 36 Women Give Motherhood a Voice. Led by some truly inspiring mothers, this hands-on workshop launches the exhibition and offers a unique chance to get creative (even if you think you’re not), exploring our identity within a global community of mothers.

On Sunday from 1pm to 3pm, Story of Mum joins the Museum of Motherhood’s Family Day for a pop-up Family Make Date. Bring your kids to play and add your own voice to the exhibition.

Story of Mum: Mums Making an Exhibition of Ourselves draws on participatory creative activities to investigate identity: 25 short films from a diverse group of mothers describe the everyday joys and heart-breaking challenges of motherhood, each film connecting the next to a greater mothering narrative. At each event, a wall of Mama Mash-Up collages are created by mothers to capture different aspects of our identities, inspired by the work of artist-mother Suzi Banks Baum.

The exhibition’s ever-growing communal mum poem has been guest curated by UK poets Hollie McNish, Sally Crabtree and Caroline Davies on the tour so far. Mothers also complete the sentence “I’m a mum and a…” for photographed portraits, including many collected by M.O.M. this year. Multi-taskers and dreamers, entrepreneurs and cleaners, taxi drivers and secret singers. What else are you?

Creativity can connect us deeply to who we are and what we want. And sharing our stories reminds us that all mothers are different, the same, and amazing. Visitors to Story of Mum: Mums Making an Exhibition of Ourselves have described the experience as stimulating, entertaining, thought-provoking and beautiful. They felt proud, humbled, exhilarated, joyful, inspired and honoured, their opinion of motherhood changed: ‘I have a new respect and awe for my own mum and mums everywhere’; ‘I’d disconnected with how I felt about motherhood. This event and project reconnected me’.

Join www.storyofmum.com’s community of creative mamas in New York to celebrate the ups and downs of motherhood, share your own story, and make an exhibition of yourself on and offline.

Suzi Banks Baum makes community wherever she goes. Passionate about stirring up jam, authentic writing voices, artist books, and mail art, she has been collaborating with Karen Arp-Sandel as part of FeMail, an almost 7 year long mail art exchange. FeMail has been featured at the Museum of Motherhood in Manhattan in a blog series. FeMail art workshops have touched women at PRESS in North Adams, at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Lenox, at Alchemy Initiative in Pittsfield and Berkshire Art Kitchen in Great Barrington. FeMail was installed in the Kitchen of Rites of Passage at the Whitney Center for the Arts in Pittsfield in June 2013 under the direction of Pooja Rue Prema and Rogue Angel Productions.
Suzi produced Out of the Mouths of Babes for the March 2012 Berkshire Festival of Women Writers. She published An Anthology of Babes: 36 Women Give Motherhood a Voice, presents the Powder Keg Sessions writing workshops and just sent her son off to a year of post high school graduate work. You’d think she’d have more time to eat bon-bons, but Suzi is writing strong on her next book, Laundry Line Divine: A Wild Soul Book for Mothers and developing Rampant Sisterhood, her workshops on marrying authentic voice and online presence for authors and artists. Suzi creates mixed media collages and artist books in her home studio while raising two teen-agers with her husband and large messy garden. Read all about it at www.femailart.com and www.laundrylinedivine.com

Pippa Best lives in Cornwall, UK with her salty-skinned surfing filmmaking husband, boisterous 5-year-old boy who thinks he’s half Octonaut/half Power Ranger, and 2-year-old daughter who inspire her by saying YES as if it’s the easiest thing in the world. Life is a constant plate-spin of intuitive mothering and work as a script consultant on feature films and as co-director of the Cross Channel Film Lab, where she helps writers and directors to tell their stories and reach an audience. Pippa’s passion is Story of Mum, where she inspires mums (and herself) to connect and explore their identities through quirky, honest and heart-warming creative activities, sharing their stories at www.storyofmum.com, on Facebook, and at monthly #somum Mums’ Make Dates on Twitter (2nd Wednesday of every month from 8.30 – 10pm GMT, 3.30 – 5pm EST).
As well as being a mum of 3 grown ‘children’ and now a grand-mum of 3, at heart Penny Best is a dancer. Professionally a supervisor, researcher and trainer involved in learning through creative playfulness for over 40 years, she remains fascinated by the power of the body’s mind. She says “I am inspired by my daughter’s passion and her creative energies. Loving working with her; holding on to her shirt tails as she whizzes around the digital world. I hope other older experienced mums, grand-mums, great-grand-mums get inspired to share their numerous identity transitions.”

Summer Time Mail: Wish You Were Here

Posted: August 27th, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: events, Mailroom, Uncategorized, Workshops | Tags: , , , , , , | Comments Off on Summer Time Mail: Wish You Were Here

A great mail day at my house!

Karen and I are avid summer travelers.

Even our art travels.

You can see our Sketchbook Project submissions in a traveling exhibit here. If you are in Santa Fe or Saint Louis, Brooklyn or Wichita, you can find this exhibit and ask for our work by our names. They send us a little note when people see our books on this tour.

Suzi to Karen Spruce Lake July 2013

Our postal art arrives from our travel destinations and this summer was particularly busy for each of us. I think I have spent about half the summer in other places. Along with our travels, we did some very fun things together too.

Suzi FeMail to Karen June 2013

In June, we were in Pooja Roo’s Rites of Passage in Pittsfield.

Then, Karen and I made paste papers with Joy Seidler in Holliston, MA in July.

We have not laid eyes on each other in August though our mail art keeps us connected.

Here is a card I got from Karen this summer. She made it from a napkin used at my son’s graduation party.

Karen's Card to me June 2013

How about you? Get any good mail this summer?

We have stories aplenty this fall. Stories of our travels, outdoor art making, a discovery I made of many of the postcards I sent my Mom from a period of over 40 years. (That’s right, I started sending my Mom mail when I was a baby…)
In September we will present Art and Story as Deep Connection: a workshop at Alchemy Initiative coming up on Saturday the 28th at the
Lichtenstein Center for the Arts in Pittsfield, MA. Register here. We’d love to make art and connection with you this fall!
